Welcome to Mark Church of England V.C. First School

In history this term the children have been learning about the Second World War.  We have already researched and identified the main events of the war and we are beginning to learn about the Blitz, rationing, evacuation and what it was like to be a child during the war.

In D.T. we have been making models of the Evacuation homes in the country, Anderson shelters and steam trains.

Laura's evacuation diary:-

Evacuation Diary

My name is Penny, and I’m a 13-year-old girl and I’m being evacuated because World War 2 has started. It’s 17th September 1939 when I woke up to see my mum towering over me, and my hamster cage gone. I finally worked out what was going on when I looked out of my window. All I saw was 1,000 children walking to their school, getting ready to be evacuated. I never wanted to leave, but my mum said it was the best for my health. Before I left, I had one piece of toast and some orange juice. Then, I had to leave.

As I got to the train station, there was one tear rolling down my eye. All I was allowed to take was some spare clothes and a pillow.

On the train, Hammy my hamster was running round, as nervous as I was. On the train, I sat as quiet as a mouse, until this boy, the same age as me, came up to me and sat next to me. From then onwards, I was talking to this boy like I already knew him. But I didn’t have a clue who he was. When I got to Wales, I was so frightened of not being picked. Unfortunately, I was picked by the meanest lady in whole of Wales, Mrs. Tiff-Bomb. When I got to her cottage, I couldn’t believe the state it was in. There were disgusting smells, and there were dead animals all over the floor. I couldn’t believe I had to live there! I went up to my bedroom to get ready to go to bed, when I found out that Hammy’s cage had to go at the end of my bed, which wouldn’t give me much legroom. But I managed to get to sleep in the end.

Evacuation diary

My name is Lewis I’m eight years old and nearly nine I’ve got dark brown hair and brown eyes and peach skin .

It is 1940 the 1st of  November. Today me and my sister got woken up by my mum.  She said to us get your clothes on and your gas mask and your ID tag.

I was shocked at what my mum said, I knew something was wrong.  So me and my sister, Harriet ran down stairs.  Then my mum said “Eat your cornflakes up quick or we will miss the train.”

We ran out of the house, we jumped into the car and while my mum turned the car round the corner she said "Your dad has gone to fight in the war." My sister and me didn’t speak, then I said “Will he come back?” then my mum said “ I don’t know.”

Then all of a sudden I said “ I have forgotten to pack my bag!”  So we had to go back and I ran as fast as a cheater up stairs.  I put in my suitcase my best toy he was called Cheeky and some playing cards, dressing gown, jumper and some tee shirts.

I ran downstairs and my mum gave me some food for the journey and so we parked some yards from the train station. Me and my sister and my mum got out of the car and walked into the train station.  Suddenly I heard a bark from my suitcase it was my dog Martha, she was a Jack Russell .I asked my mum if I could take her, my mum said “I’ll ask the train driver." The train driver said "If she doesn’t bark.”

I jumped onto the train and so did my sister. we sat down next to a boy called Bob, he stroked Martha.
