28 Mar 2007 - Story Week and the Easter Performance -
Towards the end of the week a mystery door appeared in our outdoor classroom and the children created their own stories to explore what they thought might lie behind the door.
Taking heed of the adjudicator's comments at the Highbridge Festival, that they should take their gold medal award-winning production of The Pilgrim's Progress "on tour", the Year 4 children at Mark School booked a bus on Friday and took their latest show on the road. In one morning the travelling pilgrims performed at Mark Church, Burnham Library and Hugh Sexey Middle School, where some of the year 5 children shared their own stories.
As well as inviting Adrian Beckingham, the Man from Story Mountain to come along with his tepee to tell stories from around the world, the school also encouraged children and parents to make their own story boxes. These contained scenery, props and characters from the stories. The parents and children practised telling the stories at home and then brought in their boxes on Friday to take part in a communal story-telling session.
Story Week culminated in the entire school performing a new production called 'Story Seekers' at The Princess Theatre in Burnham-on-Sea. In the show, a group of struggling writers embark on a story trail and in the process discover a series of doorways which give clues to a whole range of stories, brought to live through music, art, dance and drama. The children performed We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Burglar Bill, The Hare and the Tortoise, A Midsummer's Night's Dream, Egyptian Adventures and a reprise of The Pilgrim's Progress. By the end of the trail the writers were no longer struggling to find their stories.
